The Introduction to DJing and Open Decks session in Queenstown was our third collaboration with Music Tasmania towards developing the West Coast's growing and evolving local music community. These events support both the development of new talent, and the strengthening of community connections and knowledge sharing.
Artists of all ages were invited to start to explore electronic music and the art of mixing. Led by Music Tasmania CEO K Verell, the workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of DJing. The focus on understanding CDJs, beat matching, and the role of the mixer provided a strong technical foundation, while the hands-on, casual, and playful approach ensured that participants could immediately apply what they learned. Multiple DJ setups loaned by partners at Modern Musician allowed everyone ample time to play and use the technology.
By requiring no prior experience and encouraging participants to simply bring curiosity, the session removed common barriers to entry. With equipment and music from diverse genres provided, the hall was transformed into a high-tech, but low-pressure, experimental club for one night.
Transitioning into the Open Decks session, the energy shifted from guided learning to creative expression. An intimate number of people attended the session, allowing the atmosphere to evolve into one of sharing, risk-taking and play, which are essential components of creative development. This event was the first of several collaborations with Music Tasmania throughout 2026, demonstrating how experimentation with music can empower people and foster emerging talent within regional communities.
Music can be heard everywhere if you know where to listen: from the airwaves of 7XS, to the jukebox of the Queenstown Club, to Andrew's street bagpipes, to the home studios where new bands are being born, to the balcony of the Empire Hotel during it's 125th birthday celebration. This is a town of music, not just during The Unconformity Festival, but all year round - and we are here to celebrate that.
