As an organisation that celebrates the living world, enriched by bold ideas, The Unconformity is committed to working in ways that support the diverse ecosystem we coexist in.
This festival, we’ve partnered with Tasmanian-based carbon accounting specialists Newton & Henry to better understand and measure our environmental impact. Through our work together, we're strengthening our ethos of regenerative practice through both consistent reduction of emissions, and groundbreaking experimental initiatives, so that we can continue creating knowledge that lives on in the West Coast community for many years to come.
In 2024, Newton & Henry completed the first stage of a carbon assessment covering The Unconformity’s activities during a non-festival year. The findings provide us with a baseline carbon footprint and a clear picture of where our emissions are coming from.
The next phase of the assessment, to be completed after the 2025 festival, will offer a full picture of our carbon footprint across our biennial operational cycle. This will include emissions related to audience travel and other festival-specific activities, giving us a comprehensive understanding of our total impact.
This work is the first step in identifying where we can reduce our environmental footprint, and it’s already highlighted opportunities for action. From improving how we collect emissions data from suppliers to refining internal travel policies, we're working carefully to limit our ecological impact, rethinking how to make and share work with our audience.
Newton & Henry’s support has helped The Unconformity to identify practical ways of building carbon literacy into our everyday operations and festival delivery.
“We’re grateful to work with Newton & Henry as we continue shaping a future that reduces our impact on the environment,” says CEO Louisa Gordon. “Their thoughtful, place-based approach to carbon accounting aligns with our values and our commitment to reimagined futures.”
